‘Exercise In Simplicity’ is a stool that follows two rules; firstly that it be made as simply as possible, there by keeping production costs to a minimum, and secondly that it be made exclusively from bamboo. I am fascinated by this materials immense versatility, stemming either from its incredible strength, beauty and low cost or its naturally occurring tubular shape. It is the fastest growing plant on the planet and produces up to 35% more oxygen whilst absorbing 5 times the carbon dioxide as an equivalent stand of trees. E.I.S combines modern bamboo laminate and bamboo fabric with natural bamboo tubes. It is intended as an unobtrusive ‘standard’ piece that can fit into many scenarios and domestic environments and is ‘production ready’ for industrial, sustainable, manufacture. It features absolutely no other materials, no added glue or nails; instead the design of the joints exploits bamboo’s inherent properties.
